Date

Description
Petitioners
Gaillard de la Barrer (Bareria), king's proctor in the Agenais; William Chaumpeneys.
Name(s)
Barrer (Bareria); Chaumpeneys, Gaillard; William
Addressees
King.
Occupation
king's proctor in the Agenais
Nature of request
Petition in three parts.1) Gaillard de la Barrer requests confirmation of his moiety of the scrivenership of Condom, granted to him by John de Havering by special commission of the king's father for his service.2) William Chaumpeneys requests that the king grant a bailiwick and scrivenership to one of his sons, in order that he may sustain the rest of their family and marry his daughters. He recounts that he has been in the service of the king and his father for 33 years since the recovery of the Agenais by the king's father, but was captured in the last war and imprisoned, and forced to sell his property. [This petition is struck through as cancelled.]3) Chaumpeneys requests orders to the seneschal of Agenais for the restoration to his wife of a certain wood in the Agenais.
Nature of endorsement
[on face, after first request] Show the king's letters to the chancellor, and let him grant confirmation accordingly.[on dorse]1) To the first, as within.2) To the second, order the seneschal of Gascony to inform himself of the contents of this petition, and if true he should make provision to William or one of his sons. [This note is struck through as cancelled.]3) To the third, write to the seneschal of the Agenais to summon the possessors of the wood before him, and enquire into the payments made.

Note
The second section of the petition refers to Chaumpeneys serving for thirty-three years, since the recovery of the Agenais by Maurice de Craon on behalf of the king's father. Maurice de Craon was lieutenant of Gascony between 1289 and 1292, which would suggest a date around 1322. However, letters relating to the appointments of both Bareria and one of the sons of Chaumpeneys were issued on 22 November 1308. Either date would appear consistent with the handwriting, although the unreferenced date of c. 1336 given on the guard would seem incorrect.
