Description
Petitioners
Merchants of London.
Addressees
King and Council.
Occupation
Merchants of London
Nature of request
The merchants of London who have had wool taken from them to Dordrecht and Middelburg make two initial requests to the king, seeking remedy regarding wool taken from them by Conduyt and de la Pole without warrant, and concerning payment for this wool, as Conduit and Pole were paying them 40s per sarpler whereas the king had promised 40s per sack. The merchants also ask the king and council that they may have restitution for the wool taken from them as soon as possible, as they have nothing else with which to sustain themselves and their families.[There then follows a long list of merchants, the amounts of wool taken from them, and its value.]They also complain about the expenses incurred by them in transporting their wool to Dordrecht and Middelburg.

Note
Dated by E.B. Fryde, 'William de la Pole, Merchant and King's Banker' (London, 1988), p.157 to some point after March 1340, since the petition appears to refer to a loan levied from London in that month. The petition relates to the activities of the king's agents during the wool scheme of 1337-8, and was almost certainly produced at the time of, and in connection with, the prosecution of William de la Pole in 1340-1.
