Description

Name(s)
de Pateneye, William
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
William, son and heir of William de Pateneye, requests that he be restored to certain lands in Somerset in the manner previously granted to his father. He states that in the king's sixth year, Walter de Wymburne ordered the king's marshals at Clarendon to attach his father to answer concerning property in Uphill and Christon at the complaint of Agnes de Sparkeford. This was procured without the king's writ, but nevertheless an inquest was held, and Agnes illegally gained seisin of this property. Agnes then enfeoffed the queen of this land, and although William sued for eleven years for his rights, this was constantly delayed. When the king went to Gascony, he commanded Hengham to reinstate William, since he had been ousted without writ, but this order was not executed, and William has since died.
