Reference
SC 8/219/10940
Date
[? c. 1276]
Description
Petitioners
Poor men of Kings Ripton.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The people of the ancient demesne of Kings Ripton request that the king hear and determine their case against the Abbot of Ramsey without any interference from Ralph [...]ham. They have not been able to have justice in their case due to the fact that the Abbot has granted a church to Ralph, who disturbed the judgment in their case during the recent eyre in Bedfordshire.
Nature of endorsement
Let R. de Seyton and R. de Hengham be heard, and how this has been processed. [deleted]It is recorded by R. de Seyton that they were amerced because they did not prosecute, and therefore they are to pursue some other remedy in Chancery if it seems right to them.
Places mentioned
Kings Ripton, [Huntingdonshire]
Ramsey, [Huntingdonshire]
Bedford, [Bedfordshire].
People mentioned
Abbot of Ramsey
Ralph [...]ham
Roger de Seyton (Seaton)
Ralph de Hengham.
Note
Dated on the guard to? c. 1271, with reference to the appointment of Seyton and Hengham as justices in eyre in Hampshire on 20 November 1271 (they also sat in Kent Sussex and Surrey in 1271-2, but different justices sat in Bedfordshire at this time (Crook, General Eyre, pp.139-42)). However, the petition was probably associated with a court case which took place in 1276 between the king and the Abbot of Ramsey over rights in the manor; for details, see 'Select Please in Manorial Courts I', Selden Society vol. ii (1888), pp.99-106; VCH Hunts, II, pp.207-9; 'Placitorum Abbreviatio', p.188. Seyton retired in 1279 and probably died in 1280. It is unclear whether the 'Ralph [...]ham' mentioned in the petition is Ralph de Hengham, mentioned in the endorsement, but this seems quite likely.
