Reference
SC 8/218/10876
Date
[? 1280]
Description
Petitioners
Archbishop of Canterbury.
Addressees
King.
Occupation
Archbishop of Canterbury
Nature of request
The Archbishop of Canterbury states that his tenants of Wrotham and those of Westerham, now held by the Abbot of Westminster, are jointly responsible with others for the maintenance of the bridge at Rochester. However, the Abbot now claims to be quit of such responsibility, and the Archbishop asks that the king has regard for the great damage which will be caused if the bridge is not maintained.
Nature of endorsement
It seems to the council that the tenements which are obliged to repair the bridge should be bound to do so, notwithstanding any charters, and that the tenants of these ought to be bound to do what they are accustomed to do.
Places mentioned
Wrotham, Kent
Westerham, [Kent]
Rochester, [Kent].
People mentioned
Abbot of Westminster.
Note
Dated on the guard to c. 1280, with reference to a commission to enquire into responsibility for the repair of the bridge issued on 11 November that year. However, there is no direct link, the other reference cited appears irrelevant, and the hand might be slightly later in date, although probably still in the reign of Edward I.
