Reference
SC 8/218/10865
Date
[? c. 1307]
Description
Petitioners
Commonalty of the Seven Hundreds of Windsor.
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
The commonalty of the seven hundreds of Windsor state that whereas the expenses payable to the knights of the shire for Berkshire were accustomed to be paid by all holders of knights' fees, the bishops and great lords have now purchased writs exempting them and their peasants from such payments, leaving them to pay the entire charge. They therefore request remedy.
Nature of endorsement
Order the sheriff to levy the sums from the free tenants of his bailiwick and others who are accustomed to pay, except the prelates, earls and barons summoned to parliament by the king's mandate and their villains, concerning which the sheriff has received a writ, such that those of the seven hundreds should not be unduly oppressed.[This endorsement appears to replace an earlier duplicate version, which was corrected and finally crossed through.]
Places mentioned
Windsor, [Berkshire]
Berkshire
Cookham, [Berkshire]
Bray, [Berkshire]
Wargrave hundred, [Berkshire]
Sonning hundred, [Berkshire].
People mentioned
Sheriff of Berkshire
Queen of England
Bishop of Winchester
Bishop of Salisbury.
Note
Dated on the guard to c. 1307. The reference to the king's late father, coupled with the handwriting and Latin endorsement, would suggest a date in the reign of Edward II, and probably the early part of that reign.
