Description
Petitioners
William de Ros (Roos), son and heir of Alexander de Ros of Youlton.
Name(s)
de Ros (Roos), William
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
William, son and heir of Alexander de Ros of Youlton, states that William, King of Scotland, gave the manor of Haltwhistle in Tynedale to Robert de Ros, including the mill to which the lord of Grindon and his people owe services, and William, son of Robert granted this to his son Alexander. Alexander, King of Scotland, purchased the manor of Grindon, and the services were paid until Grindon was forfeited and put in the hands first of John de Balliol and then the bishop, who have detained payment.
Nature of endorsement
Because the king's father died seised of the manor etc, and that suit was not sued for a long time afterwards, therefore it is to be deliberated more fully.Enrolled.Coram Rege. Herlaston.

Grendon (Grindon), [Northumberland].
People mentioned

Anthony [Bek], Bishop of Durham
[William de] Herlaston.
Note
Dated by Fraser to the period 1311-27, to between the death of Bishop Bek and the deposition of Edward II. A note on the guard suggests the period 1311-1322, suggesting that it pre-dates the grant of Grindon to Andrew de Harcla, which itself occurred before the manor's re-granting in 1323 after Harcla's forfeiture (CPR 1321-4, p.328). A further note on the guard suggests a date around 1320, based on the reference to Herlaston on the dorse.
