Description
Petitioners
John de Seleby (Selby).
Name(s)
de Seleby (Selby), John
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
John de Seleby requests that he be restored to his office of usher of the Irish Exchequer. He states that he did not receive official letters of appointment because the chancellor did not know the terms of the commission to his predecessor, instead issuing a writ to the treasurer and barons of the Dublin exchequer to grant him the position. However, because he had no patent, Ballygaveran suggested that he held the office without warrant, and ousted him. Selby states that he held the office loyally for eight years, as attested to the Bishop of Coventry and Lichfield and to Grenefeld by numerous officials, and also notes that Ballygaveran is pure Irish and not suitable to hold the office.
Nature of endorsement
[on face] Bardelby.[on dorse] Coram Rege. The treasurer and barons are instructed that, if he is pure Irish and not suitable, then he is to be removed from the office and Seleby admitted, and they are to inform the king so that letters patent are made for him. [cancelled]It is attested before the council by the justiciar and treasurer of Ireland and others that William is pure Irish and insufficient to retain the office, and that John has held the office well and faithfully. It was agreed by the council that William be removed and that the office be committed to John to hold as long as he behaves well and faithfully etc.Ireland.
