Reference
SC 8/217/10839
Date
[c. 1397]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot of Tintern.
Addressees
King and Council.
Occupation
Abbot of Tintern
Nature of request
The Abbot of Tintern states that, in the last parliament he was granted respite until the next parliament of sums outstanding from the time when he was collector of tenths granted to the king by the clergy of the diocese of Llandaff. It was also agreed that the bishop would certify the names of all those excommunicated to the lords of the relevant liberties, along with the sums due, and the bishop and lords would be ordered to make the collections. The abbot has certified the sums to the bishop, and delivered letters for the lords, but the bishop had no orders to deliver them and hence returned them, and they are not executed, and the sums uncollected. The abbot therefore requests respite until the next parliament, and that some remedy be found.
Nature of endorsement
The king grants respite until the next parliament, and since it was ordained that the bishop certify the names of the excommunicated to the lords, and the sums due, let letters of privy seal be sent to the bishop ordering him to do this, and levy the tenths due from his own lordship. Also send letters to other lords, ordering them to make the same levies, and for the bishop to receive the letters and send them on accordingly.
Places mentioned
Tintern, [Monmouthshire], Wales
Llandaff diocese, [Wales].
People mentioned
Bishop of Llandaff.
Note
Part of a large series of petitions from the Abbot on this issue. Dated on the guard to c. 1397, with special reference to SC 8/144/7160, SC 8/143/7127 and SC 8/22/1074, which appear to date from that period. Rees suggests a date of 1401-2, but the tenor of the petition appears to suggest that it dates to the reign of Richard II, the monarch for whom the abbot was collector.
