Earl of Northumberland, Constable of England and Council.
Nature of request
[The right end of this petition is stained and illegible.]The petitioner requests remedy regarding what appears to have been an illegal gathering or riot by his tenants and their followers at Whiphill on Thursday the feast of St Thomas Martyr (29 December).
Nature of endorsement
Issue a commission to the Earl of Arundel and his companions, justices of the peace in Sussex and Surrey, to enquire into this matter and, if necessary, arrest those responsible and keep them until they receive further orders from the king or his council.
Places mentioned
Cowdray, [Sussex]

Note
The address to the Earl of Northumberland as Constable presumably dates the document to some point between the accession of Henry IV and the battle of Shrewsbury. The only year when 29 December fell on a Thursday was 1401, suggesting that the petition dates to 1402 or possibly shortly thereafter.
