Nature of request
Berwyk and Chambre, proctors and attorneys for Preston, Dun and other merchants of Edinburgh, state that the merchants' ship, bound for Zeeland, was taken at sea by Dan and the goods taken to Winchelsea and Sandwich, claiming that they belonged to rebels of Gloucester and his wife, the Countess of Holland. The Duke ordered the Lieutenant of Dover to restore the goods to the merchants, but the customers have refused to do this until customs have been paid. The petitioners request that the customers be ordered to release the goods without customs, as they were taken there by force and against the will of the merchants.
Nature of endorsement
On 16 November in the sixth year, at Westminster, it was agreed that the Chancellor issue a writ under the great seal to the customers of Winchelsea and Sandwich, ordering them to deliver the goods without customs or subsidy unless they have been taken for the use of the king, provided they had not been put up for sale. Proved by the lords of Gloucester, Canterbury, York, the chancellor, Durham, Ely, the Earls of Stafford and Salisbury, Cromwell, Tiptoft and the Keeper of the Privy Seal.
