SC 8/217/10813
Date
[1422]
Description
Petitioners
John Cornewaill, knight.
Name(s)
Cornewaill, John
Addressees
Council.
Nature of request
John Cornewaill states that Fillygh, who held lands in Devon of him by right of his wife Elizabeth, countess of Huntingdon, died leaving an under-age heir while Cornewaill was in the king's service overseas. However, Chichestre has taken possession of the heir, taking him to Wales and preventing Cornewaill from having his right. He therefore requests that the council summon Fillygh to appear before them with the heir, as he has been unable to gain possession by the common law.
Nature of endorsement
On 18 February in the ninth year [1422] it was agreed by the council that a writ be sent under the great seal to Chichestre, ordering him to appear before the council at Westminster at Easter next one month, bringing the heir with him, under pain of £200.
Places mentioned
Devon
Wales.
People mentioned
John Fillygh
Elizabeth [Holand], countess of Huntingdon, wife of the petitioner
John Chichestre (Chichester).
Note
The endorsement is dated 18 February in the king's ninth year, which a note on the guard states as 1422. Given that Cornewaill married Elizabeth in 1400 and she died in 1425, this could conceivably refer to either 9 Henry IV or 9 Henry V; however, the reference to Cornewaill being abroad in the king's service would seem to indicate the reign of Henry V.
