Nature of request
Hardewyk recounts that on the eve of St Thomas in the first year of Henry IV's reign (1399) his ship, with goods and merchandises to the value of £4000, was captured near the port of Lisbon by men of Castile. He sued an action against Bilbao and other men of Castile in the court of the Admiral of the West, as a result of which a ship called 'le Marie' of Bilbao with its goods was arrested by the Admiral's officers at Combwich and process continued in the same court until judgment was given to the petitioner. Before the judgment was executed Bilbao claimed in the Chancery that the ship was arrested wrongfully, and a commission was directed to Hull and others to enquire into the reason for the arrest, and they took the ship and goods into the King's hand. The petitioner requests that a writ be directed to Hull and the other commissioners ordering them to remove the ship and goods from the King's hand so that the petitioner can have due execution of the same.
Nature of endorsement
On 22 March in the third year (1402) it was agreed that a writ should be made under the great seal to Hull, Malet, Hull, Mitchell, Gosse and Warde to release the ship and goods of Bilbao, in the King's hand as a result of Bilbao's suit, from the King's hand so that Hardewyk, who was awarded the said ship and goods in the court of the Admiral of the West, can have execution of the same ship and goods, particularly because Bilbao has released to Hardewyk all manner of actions which he has or could have against him because of the said ship and goods.
