Description
Petitioners
Merchants of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The merchants of Newcastle state that a great part of the wool of the region is shipped from Berwick where only 1 mark a sack is paid in customs, but at Newcastle they pay 50s a sack of the same wool, so that they cannot sell in the same market as the people of Berwick. Because of this the King and council granted them licence to ship 1000 sacks of wool, hides and fleeces at the rate of 40s a sack until All Saints next, but because of the brevity of this term and their poverty they were unable to ship the wool. The petitioners request an extension of the grant for the following year, estimating customs of £2000 where for the past two years there were none, considering that Northumberland, Westmorland and Cumberland, where they used to live and trade, were completely burnt and destroyed by the King's enemies.
Nature of endorsement
On 17 October in the 12th year (1388) the lords at Cambridge agreed that the petitioners should have licence by letters under the great seal for both aliens and denizens in the port of Newcastle to ship 1000 sacks of wool, hides and fleeces from Northumberland, Westmorland and Cumberland, the bishopric of Durham and Richmondshire between now and Easter next, with a rebate of 10s only on the custom of each sack.
