Nature of request
Thomas, bishop of Ely requests remedy since by charters of the King and his progenitors his predecessors were granted diverse franchises including all forfeitures on the Isle of Ely and elsewhere in their lordship, but recently some of the bishop's tenants and men were sentenced to death before the King's justices, because of which the escheators of Cambridgeshire, Huntingdonshire, Suffolk and Norfolk seized their goods and chattels, contrary to the said charters. The petitioner also requests that writs be granted to the escheators to remove their hands and to the barons of the Exchequer to surcease in this matter.
Nature of endorsement
This petition should be sent to the chancellor and writs directed to the said barons and escheators to suffer and leave in peace the things contained in this petition until the next parliament.
Note
Dated on the guard to c.1381, with reference to CFR 1377-83, p. 265, a 1381 commission to Richard Earl of Arundel of the keeping of all lands and goods of any men convicted of treason in the bishopric, and CCR 1381-5, pp. 42, 182 and 255, 1382-3 orders to suffer Richard earl of Arundel to take the goods and chattels of men of the bishopric of Ely, convicted of treasons until it is decided if these belong to the King or to the bishop.
