de Asshele, John
Addressees
Council.
Nature of request
Asshele recounts that Barowe, who was staying in Kingston upon Thames and in the King's service in Portugal by a writ of protection with a clause of volumus, was demanded in exigent at the suit of Ellerbek and Howom, and the petitioner and three others came to the Chancery and each pledged, on pain of 100s., to have Barowe before the justices of the Common Bench on the day on which the exigent was returnable. Asshele requests remedy, for himself and the other pledges, since the Common Bench was not sitting on the day on which the exigent was returnable because of the revolt, and has not sat until this Michaelmas term when both writs were returned, and at this quinzaine Barowe, who is again in Portugal in the King's service, was demanded in the Common Bench, and because he could neither come nor show the court his writ of protection, Asshele and the others were each charged the said 100s.
Nature of endorsement
On 28 October in the 5th year (1381) the council agreed that the petitioner and other pledges of Barowe named within should each have writs of pardon and discharge of 100 s. for the reason contained within.
