Nature of request
Burle requests that whereas the enemies of France, Flanders, Brittany and Spain have set out with all their power to harm England, and the King has ordered that Sandwich and Rye be reinforced to resist their malice and to aid the islands and surrounding country, that he have a commission to ordain on the King's behalf that all people of the Isles of Thanet and Oxney and of the country surrounding the castle of Dover, Sandwich and Rye should bring themselves and their goods to the said castle and towns for their safety, on pain of imprisonment, and that this ordinance should be made by proclamation between now and 3 May.

Dated on the guard to 1386, with reference to CPR 1385-9, p. 175, a 1386 appointment of Burley, in view of imminent invasion of the English coast by the King's enemies, to make proclamation in Sandwich, Dover, Rye, Thanet and Oxney and within 6 miles of Dover castle, that all inhabitants should go to Dover castle, Rye or Sandwich for their safety, on pain of imprisonment.
