Nature of request

Writ of scire facias of Richard II to the sheriffs of London ordering that they make it known to Manfeld, Paris, Haukyn and Horsman that they should be in Chancery on the morrow of St Lucy next to answer to the King and Wilford so that justice can be done. At the last parliament Wilford presented a petition claiming that Manfeld, Paris, Haukyn and Horsman, lately appointed to safe-keep the sea from the King's enemies from Winchelsea to Berwick, were in default of their safe-keeping, since his ship, laden at Scarborough with salted fish worth £30 to go to London, was captured, despite their assurance that the sea was safe from the King's enemies. The King issued a writ of scire facias to the sheriff of Middlesex to make it known to Manfeld, Paris, Haukyn and Horsman that they should be in Chancery on a certain day now past to answer in this matter, but he returned that they were not found nor had anything in his bailiwick. Wilford, appearing before us on that day, claimed that they had enough in London by which they could be punished.

Response of the sheriffs of London:1) Manfeld, Paris and Haukyn appoint Kirkby and Fraunceys as their attorneys.2) By virtue of this writ we informed Manfeld and Paris that they should appear before you at the time and place contained in this writ to answer as ordered in the writ, by Usk and Secchford.3) Haukyn and Horsman have nothing in our bailiwick and were not found there, so we could not inform them.4) On which day Manfeld, Paris and Wilford came into the Chancery and were given days in the octave of St Hillary next.
