Nature of request
Veer requests remedy from Manfeld, Paris, Haukyn and Horsman, who had the safekeeping of the sea from the King's enemies from Winchelsea to Berwick, since by their default the petitioner lost his coaster of men, equipment and victuals to his damage of 400 marks. Veer had certain men-at-arms sailing to Calais by the council's assignment in the company of the governor of Calais to reinforce the town and await the coming of the Duke of Lancaster, with equipment and victuals, when they were captured by the King's enemies on St Matthew last between Sandgate and Calais when Manfeld, Paris, Haukyn and Horsman were in their ships only one mile from where the coaster was taken and could have saved it if they wanted.
