Nature of request
Edward, Duke of Aumale requests that Biryton, Thornes, Ranes, Alleston and the other Birytons have writs ordering them to appear before the King's council on the octave of St Hillary to answer for their deeds and to make surety of their good behaviour to the duke's servants and tenants, since on the Wednesday before the feast of All Saints in the 22nd year of the King's reign (1398) they, along with 100 other men, came with force and arms to Meole Brace and took the hares and rabbits from the duke's free warren, fished in his river, and assaulted and tried to kill Porter, and between then and St Katherine following often lay in wait to kill Porter, so that he dares not remain in the duke's service.
Nature of endorsement
On 30 November in the 22nd year (1398) the council agreed that writs should be made to William Biryton and the others named within to appear before the council on the octave of St Hillary next to answer in this matter, on pain of an amount to be specified in the same writs by the chancellor.
