Clerc and Maigne request remedy for 350 marks stolen from Carselake's inn at Honiton on the eve of St Mark in the eighth year of the King's reign (1385) when they were lodging at the inn, having arrived in Devon from Brittany to discuss certain pressing matters with the King's council. By the custom of the realm innkeepers who lodge travellers are required to keep safe the goods and movables of their guests during their stay.
