The grievances and horrible extortions and destructions done to Jordan, abbot of Dore and his abbey. The abbot of Dore requests remedy against John ap Henry, Griffith ap Henry, Hay, Oldcastle and Thomas ap John, since:1) John ap Henry came with an armed force on the Friday before the feast of St John Baptist in the twenty-first year of the King's reign [1398] to the petitioner's manor of Morehampton and drove away his sheep found there, and from then until now holds it as his own;2) John ap Henry came with force and arms on the Friday after the feast of St James to the petitioner's manor of Morehampton and drove away all the canons' cattle found there;3) John ap Henry came with force and arms at various times between Purification in the nineteenth year [1396] and the said feast of St John Baptist [1398] to Treville and Knaudisknas and cut down 48 great oaks in the abbot's woods there for his own use;4) John and Griffith ap Henry forcefully entered all the petitioner's lands at Cantsely and have taken all its rents, issues and profits for their own use for the last three years and still do, which lands are the greater part of the abbey's maintenance;5) Hay came with force and arms on the Monday before the feast of St George in the twenty-first year of the King's reign [1397] to the petitioner's manor of Godway and lay waste to the abbot's grange there and carried away all its timber and stones to his own use;6) Hay came with force and arms at various times between Purification in the nineteenth year [1396] and St Peter in Chains in the twenty-second year [1398] to Treville and Knaudisknas and cut down 22 great oaks in the abbot's woods there for his own use;7) Oldcastle came with a force of armed men at various times between Purification in the nineteenth year [1396] and the Assumption of Our Lady in the twenty-second year [1398] to Treville and Cantsely and cut down 24 great oaks in the abbot's wood there for his own use;8) John and Griffith ap Henry sold a mansion called Shepcote, worth 200 marks, for £10 at the petitioner's manor of Trawscoed to Hanard and ap Meredith, who lay waste to the mansion and carried away all its timber and stones to their own use;9) The abbot does not dare to approach his abbey to celebrate divine service or govern his abbey and possessions for fear of being killed by John and Griffith ap Henry, Hay, Oldcastle, ap John and others of their affinity.10) Griffith ap Henry and ap John came with force and arms on the Wednesday after the feast of St Barnabas in the twenty-first year of the King's reign [1398] to the abbey of Dore, and took Madley, Oswestry and Clifford and imprisoned them for three days and nights at the wood called Snodhill and then took them to the manor of Urishay and imprisoned them there for six days until Clifford made fine and ransom and was released on his oath that he would never obey the petitioner again, and then Madley and Oswestre were brought to the manor of Gwenddwr and imprisoned there.
