Nature of request
Gunsales requests remedy for £2000 worth of merchandises loaded in Portugal on the ship called 'St Marie de Grace' to bring to Southampton. When the ship was at sea off the coast of England they came across William de Foxton's ship, of which John Foxton was master, with 80 armed men on the Sunday before Christmas in the sixth year of the King's reign (1382). So forcefully did the men attack the petitioner in order to have his ship and merchandises that, for fear of his life, he sailed away from them until he came to Southampton where he anchored and waited for assistance in resisting them, saying that they were Portuguese and friends of the King. Because the armed men didn't have power to apprehend the ship and rob it, they went to Polymond's ship, of which Paten was master, and Willesdon's ship, of which Mathew was master, which three ships came to the Portuguese ship, when he had been anchored in the haven for three days, entered it and sailed it, with all its merchandises, out to sea where it was wrecked and the merchandises ruined.
