Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/208/10384
Date
[1327]
Description
Petitioners
Wulstan Bransford, Bishop-elect of Worcester.
Name(s)
Bransford, Wulstan
Addressees
King and Council.
Occupation
Bishop-elect of Worcester
Nature of request
The petitioner [not specified, but presumably Bransford] recounts how the Prior and chapter of Worcester were granted licence to elect a successor to Bishop Thomas, which they duly did. This was confirmed by the king and the Archbishop of Canterbury, and the king received the bishop-elect's fealty and restored the temporalities. However, the Archbishop and chapter have now received a bull and letters from Rome to obstruct this election, and the petitioner therefore requests that the king order the Archbishop and the Chapter that they should not obey any such orders without the agreement of the king, since the bishop-elect has been confirmed in his temporalities and should not be ousted.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Worcester, [Worcestershire]
Rome, [Italy].
People mentioned
Thomas [Cobham], Bishop of Worcester
Prior and Chapter of Worcester
[Walter Reynolds], Archbishop of Canterbury.
Note
Orders to consecrate Bransford were issued on 17 November 1327 (the day after the death of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Walter Reynolds), seemingly in response to this petition. The temporalities of Worcester were restored to Bransford on 8 October 1327, suggesting that the petition itself was submitted between these two dates, a date seemingly confirmed by the document at SC 8/208/10383, a memorandum noting that council had given its advice, dated 11 November. The petitioner, although unspecified, is presumably either Bransford himself or someone on his behalf.
