Reference
SC 8/208/10360
Date
[c. 1338-c. 1360]
Description
Petitioners
The good people of the county of Wiltshire.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Request for remedy against the robbers who have assembled in great multitudes, on horse and on foot, since the king's passage [abroad]; the people of the county dare not move around or even stay at home unless in a castle or fortified place.
Nature of endorsement
[None.]
Places mentioned
Wiltshire.
Note
The petition is dated on the guard c. 1328 on the basis that the king's 'passage' referred to in the petition is a journey taken by Edward III into Wiltshire in 1328; in fact, it is evident that the reference is to the king's absence from the realm. Although the date remains uncertain, it is therefore likely that the petition comes from one of the longer periods of Edward III's absence during the first phase of the Hundred Years War.
