Date

Description
Petitioners
William de Brewose (Braose).
Name(s)
de Brewose (Braose), William
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
[Petition in 4 parts, 3 on the face, and 1 on the dorse].1) Brewose requests remedy as while he was in the service of the king in his wars, and despite prohibitions from the king and from the justice the people of Henry de Lancaster at his and his wife's command entered Brewose's land of Gower and robbed, wounded and killed his people against the king's peace.2) Brewose requests remedy as when his knights and ministers came to the county court of Carmarthen by command of the justice, Maud de Lancaster caused Avenel and others to watch the roads to kill them when they returned despite the safe-conduct given to them by the justice.3) He further requests remedy as his knights and ministers have been threatened with life and limb and the burning of their houses, and that they would be arrested when they are found.4) Brewose shows the king that the justice of Wales treats many of Brewose's people of Gower in the county court of Carmarthen for the appeal made by Wenthlyene, widow of Ievan made in the county for the death of her husband. Brewose holds the liberty of Gower from the king, and that neither he nor his people in the liberty ought to answer for anything done in that liberty before any minister of the king in Wales as the justice alleges, and that Ievan was killed in the liberty of Gower, and he asks that the justice of Wales be commanded to bring the appeal before the king.
