Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/204/10168
Date
[c. 1322]
Description
Petitioners
William de la Sale, son of Roger de la Sale, son of William brother of Alexander de Mere.
Name(s)
Sale, William
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Sale requests remedy as on the death of Mere, his kinsman, who held certain tenements in Bradwell of Audley, Audley entered as keeper by right because of the minority of Sale. However, Audley was ousted by the power of the earl of Lancaster and Meldon and others. Sale is now of full age and has sued a writ of Chancery to enquire who is next heir of Mere and of what age and the inquisition is sent into Chancery by the inquisitors.[The petition is followed by a transcript of the inquisition, the original of which survives as SC 8/204/10167, the copy excluding the names of the jurors].1)
Nature of endorsement
He should declare in whose hand the tenements are, whether in the king's hand at Michaelmas, and if in the hand at Michaelmas, he should sue at the common law.2) The inquisition should be made to come before the council.
Places mentioned
Bradwell, [Staffordshire].
People mentioned
Alexander de Mere
Nicholas de Audeleig (Audley)
Thomas of [Lancaster,] earl of Lancaster
Michael de Meldon (Melton)
William Russel, son of Adam Russel.
Note
The petition dates to c.1322 as the transcript of the inquisition that follows the petition dates to 5 July 1322, and it is unlikely that the petition post dates this dramatically. As the response to the petition refers to Michaelmas, the petition is likely to late 1322 or early 1323 perhaps being presented to the November 1322 parliament held at York, if the petition is a parliamentary petition.
