Reference
SC 8/203/10149
Date
1324
Description
Petitioners
John de Wanetynge (Wantage), warden of Merton College.
Name(s)
de Wanetynge (Wantage), John
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
warden of Merton College
Nature of request
Wanetynge requests that the king will consider the record and process of the suit between Wanetynge and the late earl of Lancaster as he petitioned to the last parliament held at York of a writ of darrein presentment of the church of Embleton, and it was ordered that the record and process be brought into Chancery and be viewed, and it still resides there.
Nature of endorsement
[On face].This petition was sued in the parliament held at Wesminster in the quinzene of the Purification, 17 Edward II.[On dorse].1) Let the record be sent before Staunton and his companions, and let it be ordered to them that they hear the reasons of the parties and enquire of the truth of the business, and they should go to final issue but should not render judgment without consulting the king. Let no writ be made before the king has said his will.2) Coram rege.
Places mentioned
Merton College, Oxford, [Oxfordshire]
Embleton, [Northumberland]
York.
People mentioned
Thomas [of Lancaster], earl of Lancaster
Hervey de Stanton (Staunton).
Note
The petition has an apparently contemporary additional note below the petition which dates the petition to the parliament held at Westminster in the quinzene of the Purification, 17 Edward II, thus dating the petition to February 1324. As it is very unusual to have such a note entered on a petition, it is not clear whether this was added to a later copy of the petition submitted with a later petition, where such a note would have value to those considering the later request, or whether this is just an unusual addendum to a petition from that parliament.
