Nature of request
The people of Leicester request that if their town is let at farm it be let to the more loyal people of the town at the ancient farm and that the ancient usages and customs be maintained and the bad ones ousted. After the town came into the king's hand by the forfeiture of Simon de Montford when it was given to Earl Edmund, redress was made of bad customs and usages, but under Earl Thomas evil people have put the farm so high that levying it has destroyed the people.1)

The king wishes to enquire of these bad customs, and will do what he considers ought to be done.2) Coram rege. Herlaston.

The petition clearly dates to 1322 as it is after the fall of Thomas of Lancaster, and this is confirmed by the inquisition held in response to the petition on 12 June 1322 (CIM 1307-49, no.548). See also VCH Leicestershire, vol. IV, p. 19.
