Date
[1327]
Description
Petitioners
Robert le Brun, son and heir of Richard le Brun.
Name(s)
Brun, Robert
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Brun requests that an inquisition in the time of the late king be viewed and that reason be done to him concerning the sum of £20 that Brun's father borrowed from Fitz William at the request of the commonalty of Cumberland towards the fine made with Edward de Bruce for a sufferance. His father and Fitz William have died and the executors of Fitz William have sued a writ of debt against him. He sued to parliament for remedy and the inquisition was ordered, taken and returned into Chancery, but Baldock, the then chancellor did not wish to do anything.1)
Nature of endorsement
The inquisition should be brought.2) Because it was found by the inquisition that the commonalty fined with Bruce to have a sufferance, and that the father of the petitioner obliged himself and his heirs to Fitz William in £20 for the commonalty at their request and that the petitioner has satisfied the executors of Fitz William and no satisfaction has been made to him, let it be ordered to the sheriff to levy the £20 from the people of the commonalty who had salvation by the sufferance, and pay the petitioner.
Places mentioned
Cumberland
March of Scotland.
People mentioned
Edward de Brus (Bruce), keeper of the march of Scotland

Note
The petition dates to 1327 when the sheriff of Cumberland was ordered to levy the sum due to the petitioner and pay him (CCR 1327-30, p.61). It is possible that documents SC 8/203/10116-8 were formerly attached to this petition rather than this now simply now being filed with them.
