Description
Petitioners
Robert le Brun, son and heir of Richard le Brun.
Name(s)
Brun, Robert
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Brun requests that the sheriff of Cumberland be commanded to levy £20 from the commonalty of Cumberland from each man according to his estate, and to pay the sum to him. The commonalty made fine with Bruce for a sufferance for a certain time, and because they had little time to raise the sum Brun's father, at their request borrowed £20 from the heirs of Gilbert Fitz William who have recovered the sum from Brun because the commonalty did not wish to pay him.
Nature of endorsement
Let certain people be assigned in Chancery to enquire of the contents of the petition, and return the inquisition into Chancery, and there let the inquisition be viewed, and if it is found that it is as was suggested, then let it be ordered by writ to the sheriff of Cumberland that he levy the sum from each of those that assented to the redemption, namely each in proportion to his goods and chattels, and the sums levied are to be delivered to the petitioner.
Places mentioned
Cumberland
March of Scotland.
People mentioned
Edward de Brus (Bruce), keeper of the march of Scotland
Commonalty of Cumberland

Note
The petition dates to 1325 as it is very likely to be contemporary with the writ and inquisition formerly attached to it (SC 8/203/10116-7).
