Description
Petitioners
Burgesses of Oxford
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The petitioners state that grants have been made to the Chancellor and university of Oxford which are contrary to their liberties, the law of the land, and the Great Charter, and are to the prejudice of the crown, and which have thrown them into such a state of subjection and oppression that they cannot levy the King's farm or keep the peace; so that they will be compelled to abandon the town if they do not have the King's help. They ask that the Chancellor and Mayor and burgesses might be summoned before the justices of both benches, together with some of the wisest bishops who have not taken an oath to the university, and the Barons of the land, so that when the franchises on both sides have been examined, the rights and liberties that each party ought to enjoy might be fixed and established, and there might be peace between town and university.
Nature of endorsement
It seems to the council, if it pleases the King, that a writ should be sent to the Chancellor and university, and also to the Mayor and bailiffs, that they should be before the King's council at York at the quindene of Trinity, with their charters and other muniments, to show which franchises and privileges they are claiming, on one side and the other, and to receive a final decision on their franchises, privileges and cognisances, and on the executions of the same, as the council shall decide. And they are also to be told that neither side is to attempt any disturbance or harassment of the other in the meantime, by force or in any other manner, on pain of everything they can forfait. And the Mayor and bailiffs are to have their charters to the said . . ., notwithstanding the day given in Chancery on the morrow of the Trinity for showing their charters, provided that the Chancellor and university are in the meantime to have the assize of bread and ale and the assay according to their commissions.
