Nature of request
William de Eland, Constable of Nottingham castle, makes six requests:1) He requests an ordinance to have the castle and its people provisioned and equipped.2) He states that the hall of the castle is on the point of collapse, as the King has seen, but that the King's order to repair it has had no effect. He requests a remedy.3) He states that the weir in the River Trent leading to the castle mills is broken, and the mills also in disrepair because of this, and asks that the weir and mills might be repaired swiftly.4) He states that the King and council have sent the Earl of Moray to him for safe-keeping in the castle, and that he has been there since the Friday after Martinmas; he asks that he might have some money for his expenses.5) He asks that he might be discharged of the keeping of Roger de Moubray, who has been in his keeping since the Nativity of St John the Baptist a year ago, and that he might be sent elsewhere.6) He states that there is a new forester of Bestwood hay, and he refuses to deliver wood for work on the castle, mills and weir without warrant. He asks that a warrant for this wood might be sent to the forester or his lieutenant.

Note
CPR 1334-8 p.163 is dated 13 August 1335, and the petition would seem to date from shortly after this. CCR 1333-7 p.617 is dated 25 September 1336, and suggests that money was paid for the Earl's expenses from 25 August of the year before (although some of this may have been retrospective).
