Sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk
Nature of request
Alexander de Claveringge, Sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk states that he arrested a ship laden with wine and honey belonging to Ralph Crespont of Louvain, John Bygenous of Cologne, and John de Welle of Brussels, merchants of Brabant, in Kirkley Road, Suffolk, at the King's command, and demanded security from the merchants that they would not take these goods to the King's enemies, and that because Bernard le Blank of Narbonne, Admiral of the French Navy, came with a great force, took some of the wine, and tried to take the rest and to kill the merchants, Alexander had the remaining wine and honey taken for safe-keeping to Great Yarmouth. When the merchants found the required security, he would have delivered their goods to them, but Robert de Fordele, Richard Randolf, Robert de Drayton, and Seman atte Sond, bailiffs of Great Yarmouth, forced the merchants to pay them two fines to have delivery of their wine and honey: contrary to the King's command, as the goods were taken in Suffolk and only taken to Great Yarmouth for safe-keeping. He requests a remedy for these wrongs.
