Description
Petitioners
John de Bures.
Name(s)
de Bures, John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
John de Bures states that he was in the King's service, going towards Brittany and Poitou, and came to Winchelsea on St Silvester's day in the King's twenty-second year (31 December 1348), intending to go overseas, but that by collusion between Ralph Caus, Vincent le Fynch, John his brother, and others, John de Menil brought a plea of debt against him in the King's court of Winchelsea, and, by favour of the Mayor and bailiffs, falsely recovered £4 7s 6d against him in his absence: and by colour of this, Robert Arnald, then Mayor of Winchelsea, and others broke into his chamber in his lodgings on the Monday after Epiphany and into his coffers, and carried off his goods and chattels, and also a bond made to him by Ralph Caus for £3043 4s.: so that he lost his recovery against Ralph, as well as his other goods and chattels. John has sued for four years and more on this business, in the court of Winchelsea, and the court of Shipway, which court he considers unjust, as it is held so rarely that the business is delayed, and he is also tried by those who are doers and maintainers of his wrongs. He has complained to the last parliament, and often to councils, and the King and council have ordered that justice be done; but to no effect. He asks that the matter might be determined before the King and council, or that he might be given redress in some other profitable way.
Nature of endorsement
He is to sue at common law.
