Description
Petitioners
John de Neweland (Newland), parson of Blisworth.
Name(s)
de Neweland (Newland), John
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
parson of Blisworth
Nature of request
John de Neweland, parson of the church of Blisworth, states that the master and brothers of the Hospital of St John of Northampton were excommunicated in a case of tithes at his suit, but that the Sheriff has not been able to seize their bodies from the Nativity of Our Lady last until now, because they have fled to sanctuary. John therefore petitioned the Archbishop of Canterbury and the other prelates of the province at their last council in London - a copy of the petition and the deliberation on it are attached to this petition - and the petition was sent to Chancery. John asks the King and council to consider this petition and its response, and to provide a final remedy in this parliament, for the punishment of these rebels wherever they are.A copy of the petition to the Archbishop and prelates of the province of Canterbury, and of their deliberation on this, follow.
Nature of endorsement
[On face] The King's council, with the assent of the prelates, has agreed to the aforesaid deliberation and to the said response.[On dorse] It is answered elsewhere.

Note
John de Neweland was parson of the church of Blisworth in 1317 (CPR 1313-17 p.674, dated 18 June 1317, and CCR 1313-18 p.478, dated 12 June 1317) and was still parson in 1333 (CPR 1330-4 p.421, dated 11 April 1333). But he was not parson as early as 1309, when William de Ayreminne was presented to the church on 7 October (CPR 1307-13 p.193). The hand and the Latin response might suggest a date in the reign of Edward II, rather than Edward III.
