Name(s)
de Bourgherssche (Burghersh), Robert
Addressees
Chancellor and council.
Nature of request
[This petition is damaged.]Robert de Bourgherssche states that when William Servat, merchant of London, loaded a ship at Dieppe for London, it was robbed at sea by a cog from Hoek in Flanders, which took the stolen goods to Winchelsea. At William's complaint the ship was arrested there until justice could be done, and the master and two of his companions came ashore to explain their actions: but in the meantime the other sailors set out for Flanders with the cog, the stolen goods, and the ten-year-old nephew of William's wife. The master and two sailors appeared before Robert de Bourgherssche, and at first claimed that the goods belonged to merchants from Montpellier, their enemies, and then, when this was shown to be false, asked to go to Flanders to have them brought back. Robert asks the Chancellor and council for orders on this matter.

Note

This petition must date from some point between these two dates. The Close Roll calendar identified 'La Hok' as Hoek in the Netherlands.
