Date
[1307-1309]
Description
Petitioners
Burgesses of Overton in Wales.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The burgesses of Overton in Wales make eight complaints:1) They state that Ivo de Sulton, the King's bailiff there, has leased to Welshmen a wood where they used to have common of pasture, so that they cannot have their easements there as they used to in the King's father's time and his own.2) They state that the same Welshmen ought to rebuild the King's manor and mills there at their own cost, whenever they are burnt down or destroyed, and that they burnt down the manor in the war of Madoc ap Leuelyn and the mills were flooded; and that if the woods are destroyed there will be no timber for rebuilding.3) They state that Ivo, as justice, delivers prisoners not repleviable, receives indicted felons to the peace contrary to common law, and delivers outlaws and notorious felons and fugitives for payment, such as William ap Azaf.4) He receives to the peace felons such as Eynon le fiz Eynon Wachan.5) [Partly illegible] Ivo appears to be interfering with the services traditionally performed by the people of Bangor on Dee and Knolton, who are neifs.6) [Partly illegible] They state that Ednyfed ap Yeuaf Wagthan and his brother's sons and Gruffudd Duy hold lands and take wood without warrant.7) [Partly illegible] They state that Thomas de Maclesfeld has appropriated to himself the escheats of Worthenbury and Shocklach Moor in fee, and is holding them without paying anything for them.8) [Partly illegible] They state that Ivo has seized all their lands and chattels into his hand, and that they cannot remain there without help from the King.

Note
Dated to 1309 by Petitions Relating to Wales pp.340-2, as Ivo de Sulton was bailiff of Overton between 1305 and 1309: the mention of the King's father in the first petition suggests a date in the reign of Edward II. But this becomes problematic in the light of SC 8/63/3131, dated to 1307-1308, and from the son and heir of Thomas de Macclesfield, who in this petition appears to be still alive.
