Description
Petitioners
Proctors of the towns of Gascony.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The proctors of the towns of Gascony state that they have pledged a great part of their letters to various people of London for certain sums of money to be paid at certain days; and that they have nothing with which to pay this. They request writs to the Mayor and Sheriffs of London, and to all bailiffs under whom those who have these letters are, to order that they should not be alienated or sold until they have received some fixed sum of their assignment so that they can acquit them. And if they have been sold or alienated, they ask that they might be returned, so that they have them on the day when the proctors can acquit them.
Nature of endorsement
When the Bishop of Chester, the Earl of Lincoln and John de Sandale, or some specified person in place of the said John, are in London - as they are shortly to go there - it is then to be done to them as is contained in the petition. And therefore a writ of the Chancery of England is to be sent to the Mayor and Sheriffs of London that the letters of the same merchants, by which the King owes them various debts, and which are pledged to various burgesses and citizens of the said city and others, are not to be sold, but kept safely and securely, until the coming of the aforesaid bishop, earl and John, or until they have some other command from the King.
