SC 8/202/10058
Date
[? c. 1330]
Description
Petitioners
King's liege people of North Wales.
Addressees
[King]
Nature of request
The petitioners state that the King has a profit in various places in North Wales called 'puture of stallion', and that the farmers of this profit levy it excessively, to the great oppression of those who must pay it. As Edward I granted that his lieges in Wales should have their customs and usages from the time of the Princes of Wales, except for those points amended by him and his council, they ask the King to order his Justices of North Wales to inquire into how this profit was taken in the time of the Princes of Wales, and to do justice to them in the light of this.
Nature of endorsement
The Justice of North Wales or his lieutenant is to be ordered that they are to inform themselves by inquisition and in all other good ways they can about the customs and usages contained in this petition; and when they have obtained this information, they are to ordain such a remedy that the payers should not suffer any extortion or wrongful oppression contrary to the ancient usages; provided always that the King does not lose the farm which belongs to him.
Places mentioned
North Wales.
People mentioned
Edward [I], King of England.
Note
Dated to 1330-1331 by Petitions Relating to Wales pp.339-40, with reference to a commission of oyer et terminer issued on 15 December 1330 as the result of a petition by the commons of North Wales concerning oppressions by William de Shaldeford under colour of his office. This may not be relevant, but from the hand and the reference to the King's grandfather, this date would seem to be quite possible.
