Reference
SC 8/201/10047
Date
[c. 1327]
Description
Petitioners
Richard de Drax.
Name(s)
de Drax, Richard
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Richard de Drax states that John Alcok, parson of Swinefleet, his uncle, whose heir he is, and his ancestors, were seized of 10 acres of moor and peat-bog in Reedness from the time of William the Conqueror, until Henry de Lacy, Earl of Lincoln, disseised John of them. After the death of Joan, Henry's widow, who held them in dower, they came into the hands of the King's father when Alice, the Earl's daughter and heir, released and quitclaimed them to him. Richard requests a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
[On face] A writ is to be issued.[On dorse] Certain people are to be appointed in Chancery to inquire, in the present of the keeper of the abovementioned tenements, into what status the abovementioned John had in the aforesaid tenements, and how and at what time the said tenements came into the hands of Henry de Lacy, and likewise how the same tenements came into the King's hands, and into all other circumstances touching this business. And the inquisition is to be returned in Chancery, and shown to the King.
Places mentioned
Swinefleet, [West Riding of Yorkshire]
Reedness, [West Riding of Yorkshire].
People mentioned
John Alcok, parson of Swinefleet
William [I], King of England
Henry de Lacy, Earl of Lincoln
Joan [de Lacy], Countess of Lincoln
[Edward II], King of England
Alice [de Lacy (de Lancaster)], daughter and heir of the Earl of Lincoln.
Note
From the mention of the land coming into the hands of the King's father after the death of Joan, Countess of Lincoln (who died around October 1322 (CFR 1319-27 p.180)), this petition would seem to date from the early years of the reign of Edward III.
