Description
Petitioners
Nicholas de Stapelton.
Name(s)
de Stapelton, Nicholas
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Nicholas de Stapelton states that because he was of the company and retinue of the Earl of Lancaster, he was imprisoned in York castle immediately after the Earl's death, and his lands, chattels and valuables, and the muniments concerning his inheritance taken into the King's hand; and he was afterwards made to pay a redemption by Hugh le Despenser and others, to be released from prison. His lands and chattels are still in the King's hand; and he has nothing to live on. He asks that he might be quit of this wrongful redemption, and that he might have his lands, chattels and muniments back, together with the issues from his lands in the meantime.
Nature of endorsement
This petition is to be sent into Chancery, and the Chancellor is to be advised of the reason for the taking of the lands, tenements and muniments contained in this petition into the King's hand; and if they were taken into the King's hand because of the quarrel etc., and not for any other reason, the lands and tenements are to be restored, with the issues and the arrears of the farm of which the King is not served; and the muniments are to be delivered and the fine and redemption annulled in the roll of Chancery. And a writ is to be sent to the Treasurer and Barons etc. to have it annulled there.
