Nature of request
Hemelin le Bel states that he was imprisoned in Guernsey castle by the Bailiff, because of a false accusation of theft. He was released, but, because he could not make it to the assize in time because of rough seas, he was sent back to prison. He has sued to the Bailiff to have an inquisition, but nothing can be done without the King's writ, which he cannot have through poverty; with the result that the Bailiff has made him abjure the country until he has the King's command. He requests the King's grace, that he might have a letter of inquisition addressed to the Bailiff, and that if he is found to be good and loyal, that he might be able to live at peace in the country. He also requests a pardon for the banishment.
Nature of endorsement
[On face] The King, of his grace, wishes the banishment and the abjuring to be pardoned him, and on this he is to have his letter.[On dorse] He requests the King's grace that he might have a pardon 'in principali' because the Bailiffs record that he is banished.
