Description
Petitioners
Community of Leicestershire, except for the tenants of Robert de Ros, Theobald de Verdun, Harecurt and Hasteng.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The petitioners state that the community of Leicestershire is amerced in eyre for murder and for various trespasses and for halting the outlawry of Peter de Neuvile, and that the amercements have been set at a certain level per carucate of land; but that Robert de Ros, Theobald de Verdun, Harecurt and Hasteng and their people, whose lands make up a third of the county, are refusing to pay, claiming that they are acquitted by the palfrey that they give the King each year: without claiming any other acquittance, and although they have always previously paid their share of such amercements. The sheriffs are distraining the rest of the county for the sums due from these lands, to their great harm. They ask the King to correct this, so that these franchises pay their share.

Note
CCR 1272-9 p.6 is dated 1 February 1273. A Peter de Nevill is charged with trespass in the forest of Rutland, and is appealed in Rutland for robbery and breach of the peace: this is sufficiently close to Leicestershire for it to be quite possible that he is the same man, although it is by no means certain. A second order to release a Peter de Nevill on mainprise (CCR 1272-9 p. 9) is dated 12 March 1273: but as this Peter is imprisoned in the Fleet prison for debt, he is unlikely to be the man mentioned here. CPR 1272-81 p.143 is dated 20 May 1276: this does seem to be the same man. The hand would in any case suggest that a date around this time is reasonable.
