Date
[1297-1298]
Description
Petitioners
Barons of Dover.
Addressees
Lord Edward, son of the King, his lieutenant in England, and his council.
Nature of request
The barons of Dover state that it has never been the custom for them to attend any visitation of any Archbishop or other ordinary outside their town, by reason of the church of St Martin of Dover, which was founded by the King's ancestors on the privileges and franchises of the chapel in the King's castle; but that the Archbishop of Canterbury has summoned several of their fellow-barons to his visitation outside Dover. They have claimed their estate, but this claim has not been allowed. They request counsel and aid to save the King's estate and their own.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Dover, [Kent].
Note
The address would seem to suggest that this petition dates from Edward I's absence in Flanders, 1297-8, when his son was regent of England.
