Date

Description
Petitioners
People of Old Windsor, New Windsor and Sunninghill of the ancient demesne of the crown.
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
The petitioners state that they and their ancestors were accustomed to hold common land in Windsor Park, but that they have been ousted from this land by the king's father during the emparkment of the area known as the 'New Park'. They request that they be restored to their rights of common in that park, as they are unable to pay the dues upon their lands without the income from that common.
Nature of endorsement
Send a writ to the justice of the forest to enquire whether the tenants were seised of the pasture as the petition supposes, when the park was created and when the pasture was enclosed, and whether the tenants have sufficient pasture for their tenements outside the enclosure, and of other necessary articles, and return the inquest into the chancery, and the king will be advised.
Places mentioned
Old Windsor, [Berkshire]
New Windsor, [Berkshire]
Sunninghill, [Berkshire]
Windsor Forest.
Note
The hand and the language would seem to suggest late Edward II or early Edward III, but the reference to the King's father would seem to suggest that it dates to the reign of Edward III, referring back to events under Edward II.
