Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/201/10004
Date
[c. 1318]
Description
Petitioners
Richard de Gainsborough, Abbot of Bardney.
Name(s)
de Gainsborough, Richard
Addressees
King and Council.
Occupation
Abbot of Bardney
Nature of request
The Abbot of Bardney requests that £40 levied from his predecessor by the former sheriff be allowed to him against debts owed by him at the Exchequer. He states that in a case between John, Bishop of Lincoln and Weynflete, his predecessor, Weynflete was deprived of his office, and the abbey made fine of 100 marks for their temporalities during the vacancy. However, Weynflete was then reinstated, and the fine pardoned. However, the sheriff had meanwhile levied a sum of £40, for which they have tallies of the Exchequer.
Nature of endorsement
Coram Rege.
Places mentioned
Bardney, [Lincolnshire]
Canterbury, [Kent]
People mentioned
John [Dalderby], Bishop of Lincoln
Robert de Weynflete (Wainfleet), former abbot of Bardney
Edward I, King of England
Thomas FitzEustace, former sheriff of Lincolnshire
Note
Dated on the guard to c. 1318, with reference to SC 8/31/1541. This date is probably right: see David Smith's 'Heads of Religious houses' book under Bardney for details. FitzEustace apparently didn't serve his second term as sheriff, but did serve in 1303-5, at the height of this dispute. Richard de Gainsborough, successor to Robert de Wainfleet, was appointed abbot in 1318.
