Date

Description
Petitioners
Ellis de Joneston (Johnston).
Name(s)
de Joneston (Johnston), Ellis
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Ellis de Joneston states that at the request of the proctors of the King's grandfather's subjects of England and Gascony, he was sent to the Pope at Lyons in 1305 to purchase a form of process concerning the keeping of the peace between the subjects of the King of England and of the King of France, and that he alone has been charged with this suit since then. He is no longer capable of bearing this charge, and asks the King, his council, and the knights of the counties and people from the communities, cities and towns here present to choose suitable people for this task and to discharge him.
Nature of endorsement
Be it remembered that in the year of grace 1282 the Seneschal of Toulouse began to admit appeals from the Count in the lands which he [held?] from the King of England and Duke of Aquitaine, . . . to the same Seneschal, and that the court of the said King of England and Duke in his parliament . . . requested royal letters addressed to the said Seneschal not to meddle with these appeals.Item in the summer parliament in the sixth year a certain demand was made of the court of France of the said Seneschal for the Archbishop of Auch that they are to compel ....

Note
From the mention of 1305 and of the King's grandfather, this petition would seem to date from the reign of Edward III. Jonestone was active as keeper of the processes in the court of France for many years, and a number of petitions survive from him from the early years of Edward III's reign, requesting to be replaced, and he was replaced in 1335. The date of 1305-7 given on the guard would appear incorrect, and is inconsistent with the style of the handwriting.
