Description
Petitioners
Master and brothers of the Hospital of St John of Bridgwater.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The Master and brothers of the Hospital of St John of Bridgwater state that the Prior and convent of Goldcliff owe them an annual rent to be received from the issues of the church of Woolavington - and the transcript of the deed for this is sewn to this petition - but because the King has taken this church into his hand with other churches belonging to alien religious, because of the war with France, and has granted the administration of its fruits to Thomas Cary at farm, the rent has been withheld. They request a writ to Thomas to pay them this rent, with arrears.
Nature of endorsement
Certain people are to be appointed to inquire into the points in this petition, in the presence of the King's farmer, if he wishes to be present; and when the truth has been inquired into and the inquisition has been returned in Chancery, justice is further to be done.
Places mentioned
Bridgwater, [Somerset]
Goldcliff, [Monmouthshire, Wales]
Woolavington, [Somerset]

Note
CCR 1354-60 pp.364-365 is dated 16 June 1357. It mentions the priory being in the King's hand, but, as it does not mention Thomas Cary, is perhaps not a direct response to the petition.
