Addressees
Council.
Nature of request
William de Slengesby, Joan his wife, and Agnes her sister, daughters and heirs of Henry de Skrevyn, state that Henry and his ancestors had been foresters in fee in the Forest of Knaresborough from time immemorial, and had received puture there; and that Edmund Earl of Cornwall had transmuted that puture into a fixed sum of 6d. per day, which Henry had received until William de Vaux, Steward of Knaresborough castle, had deprived him of his bailiwick and his money. They ask that they might have the bailiwick back, with arrears.
Nature of endorsement
John de Donecastre and Richard de Bernyngham are to be appointed to inquire, in the presence of the constable of Knaresborough castle, and others concerned in the matter, more fully into the truth of the contents of the petition, and into the reason why the bailiwick was taken into the King's hand, whether for Henry's forfeiture or in some other way, and by whom it was taken into the King's hand and when, and how, and in what way, and into other articles concerning the aforesaid; and the inquisition is to be returned in Chancery, so that what is rightly to be done may further be done.
